Mokelumne Hill’s library is the home of the Mokelumne Hill History Society where the town’s archives are stored. Here’s where you can see the astonishing photography of the Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 taken by a local talented photographer, Edith Irvine. She just happened to be in San Francisco during the earthquake, and captured many of the most iconic photos of the disaster. In addition, she documented the regular life to be lived in Mokelumne Hill during the late 1800s and early 1900s – including at the school where she taught.

The building may be closed during your visit on a weekend, but there is something extraordinarily charming about this particular business. Library books are available for sale from the front porch on the honor system. Take your time, sit in one of the provided chairs and browse the available titles. When you’ve found one you’d like to keep, just put your payment in the slot provided. If your kids love visiting book stores, they will love coming to Mokelumne to select their books.
