Fly-In for a Unique View of Calaveras County

Calaveras Air Fair

The Calaveras Air Fair, Fly-in and Open House at the Calaveras County Airport, just outside the town of San Andreas.  It’s an eclectic day of fancy planes, entertainment and your chance to take the family for a plane ride for just a few dollars.   Think of it like a car show for airplanes, where plane owners from around the region fly in for the day and line up on the tarmac for spectators to admire and step inside.   Meanwhile, local pilots will be ferrying passengers up into the sky for short rides and throughout the day experimental and specialty planes will be performing flyovers.

2018: Admission is free but there is a small fee ($10 for kids, $20 for adults) for plane rides, and that goes to help fund the local Young Eagles Program, which gives people ages 8-17 the chance to go flying with volunteer pilots.  Past Calaveras Air Fair events have included classic planes, classic cars, family friendly food for sale and live music staged in one of the hangers as well. The airport sits atop a ridge about 4.5 miles south of San Andreas on Highway 49, and they have a shuttle that will bring you from your car to the tarmac.

Locals Tip – Explore San Andreas

Since you’ll be in the neighborhood, why not check out a little of what San Andreas has to offer?  Downtown, on historic Main Street you’ll find the Calaveras County Museum Complex, where you  can peak inside a 19th century courthouse – and its adjacent jail,  explore gold mining artifacts and learn about the anthropological past of the county as well.   Next door is the Gallery Store run by the  Calaveras Arts Council where you can purchase local artists’ creations in a cozy retail space. If you’re feeling adventurous, pay a visit to California Cavern, a State Historic Landmark in the nearby town of Mountain Ranch, where you can experience the underground world with a walking tour or full on headlamp and coveralls-crawl-on-your-belly expedition.  That will surely work up an appetite, so  head back into San Andreas for local favorite for deli food al fresco style at the Pickle Patch. Nearby, fine dining and a piece of history await at the Black Bart Inn, which also has accommodations for the night.  If bed and breakfast comfort is what you need after your day out, check into the Robin’s Nest, a charming old world style Victorian with modern amenities and beautiful gardens.
